A powerful line, and perhaps a perfect quote to establish the mood and themes of this series as it goes forward. “I’m a disaster that those two didn’t have the power to protect themselves from.” Our hero, Guts boasts in the final few minutes of the pilot episode. Reader beware, Spoilers abound past this point. We are going to look at the first three episodes of 2016s’ edition of Berserk. But let’s put all that to one side for now – we can revisit that thread in another article perhaps. In my latest article, I wrote on Character Arc and the God of War series, pointing out the risky business of one dimensional characters and revenge stories, I suggested that a revenge story can only have lasting appeal if its characters are strongly written, and although we are yet to delve into Guts’ backstory in the new series, I believe him to be so. I began by watching through The Golden Age Arc trilogy of movies, which I review here, once I’d hammered through those films and was thoroughly impressed, I moved to the ‘90s anime and have in the last couple of weeks begun on the extensive back catalogue of manga volumes available.Īs fate would have it, my introduction into the world of Berserk has been timely as a new Anime series has just been released, detailing story of our infamous Black Swordsman, Guts as he travels through a Medieval world hunting and being hunted by numerous evil spirits on his search for revenge. Not being hugely into anime, I only heard of the series about a year ago through some online Dark Souls forum, and it took me until last month to actually check it out.
